Surfers Against Sewage Autumn Beach Clean Series

From Saturday 19 October
Beach Clean Uk wide All Day FREE

This Beach Clean event has been running annually since 2011 and it's back this autumn! Leading UK marine charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), are inviting you to help them protect our coastlines, create cleaner oceans and clean up inland areas.

The Autumn Beach Clean Series falls during the darker, colder times when, in the absence of summer’s tourist spotlight, the health of our coastlines can slip from the nation’s mind.

The event aims to:

  • Brings together those who use our beaches year round
  • Unite, inspire and empower hundreds of coastal communities to take action
  • Remove and recycle tonnes of marine plastic pollution as we seek to create plastic freecoastlines.

The organisers, Surfers Against Sewage, are hoping to reach 500 cleans for the autumn series, with the help of 20,000 volunteers collecting 30,000kg of pollution – the highest target so far!

It will also see a continuation of the Summit To Sea initiative, which is encouraging people from non-ocean areas to get involved. They are being spurred on to do anything from:

  • Get out into nature
  • Do river and mountain cleans
  • Cleaning up urban environments by removing pollution from the streets

The Autumn Beach Clean also makes up part of SAS’s work on battling single-use plastics – something which has seen Plastic Free Communities and Plastic Free Schools explode across the country.

Seeking more motivation to help clean up the ocean?

Read about the 10 lessons student Sophie Pavelle learned walking 300 miles round Cornwall.

She was faced with both the severity of the plastic pollution problem and the sanctity of the amazing UK coasts.

Sophie's adventure was quite an epic undertaking, but if you'd like a similar simpler way to enjoy the seas and sand dunes there are plenty of ways to connect to the coastline.
