The Great British Beach Clean

From Friday 20 September
Beach Clean Beaches across the UK 9:00AM - 7:00PM FREE

Join thousands of people this September for the annual Great British Beach Clean. Join in over the weekend and you’ll be contributing to a national and global survey, and meet other people who want to help keep our beaches clean.

It does what it says on the tin - this is a UK-wide beach clean event!

It is being organised by Beachwatch, the Marine Conservation Society's national beach cleaning and litter survey programme. They inspire and bring together people from all around the UK to care for their coastlines.

Why join a beach clean?

  • Marine wildlife is under threat from litter in our seas.
  • Hundreds of species are accidentally eating or becoming entangled in, amongst other things, plastic and fishing lines.
  • Litter strewn across beaches damages tourism.

We all have a part to play in turning the tide on litter, and this is your opportunity.

To volunteer at a beach clean, all you need to do is:

  • Find an event organised by Beachwatch and sign up to attend.
  • Download the volunteer guide
  • If you need more information about the event, contact the organiser via the link on the event page.
  • Wear suitable clothing and footwear - don't forget the sun cream and a drink in a re-usable bottle
  • If you have them, bring strong gloves - like gardening gloves.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will need to sign a parental consent form on the day.
  • There will be a briefing on safety and to tell you how to go about collecting and recording the litter.

Join an event to be part of the most influential fight against marine litter in the UK.

If there isn't a pre-existing beach clean event near you, MCS encourages you to organise your own beach clean. The charity will provide all the support you might need to get the event up and running.
