The Green Edge is a family owned cafe and the largest vegan grocery store in Brisbane Australia. It is not only dedicated to reducing its waste, recycling and composting, but it also serves up delicious vegan treats. Lauren Grimshaw from Australian eco-blog, Project 3 P, swings by to check it out.="nofollow">a>

The food

The Green Edge prides itself on sustainably sourced, organically grown and locally produced meals and products. It offers a wonderfully diverse, three course menu or there are lighter snacks for on the run or sweet options to linger over.

The vegan cafe is known its burger options, such as a house made lentil patty with caramelised onion, marinated vegetables and fresh salad, all served with avocado and a capsicum aioli – and, don’t forget a side of hand cut chunky chips. There are also several beautifully presented vegan pastries and desserts at the counter, from one of Australia’s best vegan bakeries, Flour of Life.

The drinks

The drinks menu at The Green Edge is just as diverse as the food options. From hot drinks on a cool winters day, to soy frappes and iced teas, there's even freshly squeezed juices and creamy smoothies to hit that healthy spot. Or pick up one of the super popular Organic Kombucha flavours.

The vibe

The Green Edge has achieved a wonderful ambience, even the lighting in this place is perfect for that Instagram food pic. Friendly staff, it's the kind of place you can while away an afternoon and the walls are decorated with local artwork. The Green Edge’s own grocery store is linked to the dining area, which allows you to stock up on some natural and plastic free goodies to takeaway.

The sustainability bit

The Green Edge does a lot to lessen its environmental impact and minimise plastic waste. They don't stock plastic straws and have introduced bamboo replacements. They also provide discounts to customers who bring their own reusable coffee cup and they recycle 100% of their soft plastics. One committed member of staff even takes home the cafe’s food scraps to be composted, however, encouraged by this personal initiative, The Green Edge will soon be bringing in their own composting system for all fruit and vegetable waste.

Each year, The Green Edge holds its own sustainability festival to coincide with Brisbane’s annual agricultural show, where they celebrate and promote zero waste living, animal activism and cruelty free products.

When to visit
