While Monterey might be home now to glossy Alpha mums a la Big Little Lies, back here inland amongst the redwoods, there’s a much more distinct hipster vibe. Plus this year is the year to visit nearby Watsonville as it turns 150 this year.

Shabby chic stay in North Carolina
Less of a treehouse and more an actual house in the trees, this stunning option is in Asheville, North Carolina.
The shabby-chic six sleeper has really invested in being as eco-friendly as it can, with recycled paper products or cloth alternatives, solar outdoor light, non-toxic cleaning products, water-saving kitchen and bathroom fixtures and energy-saving windows. Even the toilet is a composting one.
There’s a proper kitchen, pretty deck, a fire pit and the salvaged, retro feel will make you feel at home the moment you walk in. One of the bed is right up under the eaves like a secret nest.
Use it as a base to explore XXX then relax with a home cooked meal and wine in the pretty timber-framed kitchen.
Aspire to the Appalachian Mountains
While the Appalachian trail might be on your bucketlist, there’s something be said for picking a bit of it and settling in. This luxury treehouse in Flintstone, Georgia sleeps four and there’s a bathroom (with a shower made from an old whiskey barrel). The floor is made from thousands of sparkling pennies.
While it might look a little ramshackle on the outside, this two storey treehouse is the right side of rustic inside, and the pretty windows are strung with fairy lights, while the kitchen does everything you need it to.
Take in the majestic views down the valley and revel in the enormity of this American mountain range from the compact deck or head to the forest floor to have a night cooking and drinking round the fire pit.
Get hot and humid in Hawaii
How about staying in a treehouse in Hawaii? We’ll say Aloha to that. This pretty treehouse is right next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island and was built by famous treehouse builder, Roderick Romero. There’s several bits to the treehouse with the bedroom on its own lanai, plus a kitchen, bathroom and the all important hot tub so you can sit back and enjoy Hawaii’s gorgeous climate.
This is a fun place to stay – there’s lava boulders to navigate and a ship’s ladder gives you access to the treehouse and you’re met with ferns and tropical trees everywhere you look. A few days here and you’ll fall for Hawaii’s stunning flora and fauna.
Minimal but magical palace in Maine
This treehouse in Maine is more like a palace in the trees, there’s two parts to it connected by a series of bridges – it’s like something out of a fairytale. Located near Brunkswick, Maine, it backs onto a beautiful river and has been built of mostly salvaged materials.
There’s room for four adults, with a kitchen, bathroom and plenty of room on the deck that comes with proper old rocking chairs. Inside it’s surprisingly spacious, whitewashed and minimal.
Take in the sights and sounds of the New England forest from your private hot tub or take a stroll down by the river and just relax into the rhythm of the trees.
Hole up in the trees in Tennessee
This huge open plan treehouse squats amongst the slow moving mist and bandy trunk trees near Monteagle in Tennessee. There’s seven acres to explore during the day, a barbeque and hot tub to welcome you home after a long day hiking.
This cosy but spacious treehouse can sleep four plus it has a kitchen, bathroom, all mod-cons, TV and you can even get a roaring fire going to dry damp socks. It’s the perfect spot for a long weekend exploring the forest and chilling out in the chiminea.
Sit and stargaze in the Shawnee National Forest
These two cute as a button treehouses seem tiny from the outside, but inside there’s plenty of room with a kitchen and living area downstairs and a bedroom sleeps either four or six.
The pine decor suits this rustic camping and glamping spot – there’s a campfire spot and barbecue grill, various different decks to catch the sun and best of all you’re only minutes from the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, where you can hike, ride, swim and fish.
The forest is known for rock climbing, sweeping views and epic star gazing at night.
Sleep in an urban treehouse in Seattle
Not all treehouses are in the forest. This modern take on the treehouse is all high ceilings, large windows and modern furnishings – but it’s in the centre of Seattle.
Glampers have all mod-cons here in this stylish condo style treehouse, a kitchen and plenty of electricity on the one hand but are in amongst the branches of cedar trees on the other. There’s a full sized kitchen, bathroom and living area with a TV and below a barbeque and hot tub, so you can hide away after a day’s exploring one of America’s most fascinating cities.
