Sustainable Stow Away apart hotel in London is a home away from home.

These days, our needs are different. Many of us, when staying away from home for the night or longer, want privacy, automated transactions and minimised human interaction.

We also expect tech and amenities that rival our set ups at home.

Thankfully Stow Away hotel has all of this on offer, a stone’s throw away from Waterloo station and the Old Vic Theatre in London, with The Cut and a whole host of bars and restaurants on its sustainable looking doorstep.

Stow Away Hotel Review: London's Eco Friendly Apart Hotel

The rooms

This eco friendly hotel in London is hidden in plain sight on a pedestrianised street and has been created from a series of repurposed shipping containers stacked on top of each other (26 in fact), which you access via an automated, keyless entry check in and internal courtyard staircase.

Less hotel room and more fully serviced apartment, each space has been designed with the kind of comforts you’d expect from a luxury hotel including a king size bed, black out blinds and a TV/music/screen set up that feels more like something you’ll have at home, rather than old-fashioned hotel tech.

Each bed is configured so it works as a bed and a sofa space, while elsewhere there’s everything you need to be self-sufficient including a fully set up kitchen.

There are recycling bins in room, no mini bars or single use hotel toiletries and guests are encouraged to reuse towels and turn off lights.

Hotels are ditching mini toiletries - how you can help them do it faster

The views

Each room overlooks bustling Lower Marsh with its bookshops, bars and restaurants, but it’s still quiet that you aren’t disturbed at night.

The food

While there’s no room service, Unwind offers a sustainably focused and locally sourced menu (Grezzina courgette, feta & mint borek, baked butter beans & pickled peppers anyone?) and there are no end of fantastic bars and restaurants on your doorstep.

I love the Young Vic’s cafe and the Anchor & Hope, both on The Cut or cult pizza makers Pizza Pilgrims and Franca Manca pizza both have handy outlets just down the street.

The bar

On the ground floor, across the courtyard, a beautiful plant filled, plywood inside space and outside on the street, sits Unwined - a friendly neighbourhood style wine bar that does a fine line in natural and organic wine.

Sit outside on the street and watch south London’s hustle and bustle or hide away in the courtyard and feel miles away from the station.

The sustainable bit

Stow Away’s style is upcycled industrial but it also hides a powerful array of sustainable intiatives to reduce its carbon footprint as much as possible.

On the roof are solar panels, and the AC recycles and recirculates energy between heating and hot water to reduce waste.

Each room is insulated with eco-friendly timber cladding and 100% of Stow Away’s electricity comes from renewables.

Every direct booking through Stow Away’s website, triggers a tree planted with Tree for Cities who work to increase tree planting in London and other cities.

Pick up a hirable bike or two right outside Stow Away and start your south London adventure.

3 reasons to book Stow Away

1. If you're hitting London by train, want to use the bikes or just walk and discover the South Bank you couldn't be any better located.

2. The apartment style rooms are high tech, super sound proofed and the bed feels five star.

3. Stay knowing everything that can be recycled or reduced has been so there's a much smaller carbon footprint.
