5 Vegan Shoe Brands You'll Love
From chic trainers to sexy stilettos and everyday boots for everyone, vegan shoes come in every shape and size, and appeal to any budget. But vegan shoes aren’t without their own carbon footprint.
What is a vegan shoe?
Being vegan doesn’t just relate to food and drink, fashion and shoes can be vegan. More and more of us are searching for shoe brands that match our values - where shoe brands are cruelty free and eco-friendly.
And of course you don’t need to eat vegan to shop vegan, embrace flexibility and cut down on animal products in some or all of your life. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

What are vegan shoes made of?
Vegan shoes are made of zero animal products, such as leather. Vegan shoes can be made of a range of materials including:
- Natural rubber
- Vegan leather
- Recycled fabrics
- Fruit based leathers
- Vegan friendly glue
Also none of the elements of the shoe (such as dye) should have been tested on animals.
Are vegan shoes sustainable?
This is a really good question. The answer is they should be but it doesn’t mean the shoe won’t have an impact on the environment.
Often vegan shoes aren’t as good for the environment as you want them to be as some still rely heavily on plastic. Unless they are specifically designed to be biodegradable (and some now are), then just because a shoe is vegan doesn’t mean it will be better in landfill than a non vegan shoe. And sadly that’s where most of our shoes end up.
Why is there no end of life recycling for shoes that can no longer be worn?
We don’t know, but we wish there was!
To make sure that your vegan shoes are also eco-friendly, look for vegan shoe brands that also:
- Commit to plastic free packaging
- Use sustainable materials for the sole, such as natural rubber, cork or coconut fibres
- Look at the carbon emissions for the production of the shoe and offset them
- Use biodegradable materials instead of plastic (and yes, plant based or recycled plastic, is still plastic that will break down into microplastics)
- Use vegan friendly fruit leathers like Pinatex (made from pineapple fibres)

Is vegan leather environmentally friendly?
It’s easy to assume that if a shoe brand is vegan then it’s always going to be better for the environment.
But this isn’t always the case.
What a lot of shoe brands are marketing (greenwashing maybe) as ‘vegan leather' is actually pleather (remember that from the 90s?).
It’s a plastic coated derivative of oil products, it doesn’t last very long and it doesn’t break down in landfill, so while it might be animal friendly, it’s definitely not planet friendly.
