Tucked away in North Yorkshire, Raithwaite Sandsend hotel is making great steps with respect to sustainability.

Named 2021’s most sustainable hotel in the UK, Raithwaite Sandsend is not halting its efforts in bettering the local environment.

Running entirely on renewable energy, and actively conserving the landscape, Raithwaite only has a positive impact on the environment.

The UK’s First Hotel Forest Garden

Raithwaite partnered with Sapling Spirits, a British eco-friendly alcohol company, to form a stable and sustainable ecosystem.

Collaboratively, they planted crops that produce a yield throughout the year, with plans to plant a further 500 trees this spring.

As Ed Faulkner states, founder of Sapling Spirits, the “idea of a forest garden is that it’s completely self-sustaining, while encouraging biodiversity.”

Within a couple of years, the trees planted should fruit and the plants provide herbs and produce for staff to use.

Gardens and environment

Raithwaite Sandsend is a model for just how sustainable a luxury hotel in the UK can be.

Using methods found in permaculture, everything is planted so that minimal human interference is needed and without chemical fertilisers.

For example, the hotel’s grounds include 16 organic no-dig beds, a compost site and 2 polytunnels, all to create the best environment for the crops as well as the surrounding environment and soil health.

Due to these created environments, the team is able to grow a wide variety of produce, from rhubarb and strawberries to Jerusalem artichokes and Asian salads.

Everything is arranged in a way to mimic a natural forest - from canopies to shrubs, everything is in harmony.

With a wide variety of edible produce, the hotel’s chefs and mixologists have the option of using freshly grown produce within dishes and drinks.

Not all the grounds are utilised conventionally, with some areas left to the wild, so that nature can increase biodiversity naturally.

With over 500 trees and shrubs planted in the grounds the aim for the 100 acre estate is to create a beautiful and biodiverse landscape.

The estate itself is situated between moors and the sea, meaning it hosts a wide variety of wildlife, such as 40 different types of bird.

The use of fresh, perennial fruits, herbs and spices that are used throughout the kitchens and bars in the hotel also helps customers learn more about conservation and sustainability.

Any produce not found on the grounds is sourced locally, with the aim of 80% of produce coming from a 30 mile radius. All of which will be organic and seasonal.

As a part of the Zero to Landfill scheme, Raithwaite aims to be completely zero waste by 2023.

Both inside and outside of the hotel grounds, Raithwaite Sandsend is actively making a positive impact on people and the environment. Both locally and as a business, they evidently put the planet first.
