Ethical jewellery has come along way in the last few years, with an explosion of jewellery designers working with recycled metals, Fairmined gold, ethically sourced gems and a move back to handmade eco-friendly processes.

We've trawled our networks, with some help from Harriet Kelsall, award-winning jewellery designer, the Chair of the National Association of Jewellers and non-executive director for the Responsible Jewellery Council, to discover the prettiest, most purposeful gold jewellery for Christmas.

Kelsall explains the approach she takes to ensure style and provenance for each piece she makes:

“We don’t call ourselves ‘ethical’ jewellers but we have always been passionate about improving how we work and influencing the wider jewellery industry to do the same. People come to us because they want a beautiful piece of jewellery; when they discover that it could be made in Fairtrade or recycled metal, using ethically sourced gemstones this is just an added bonus”.

Scroll down for 9 gorgeous gold jewellery pieces that look good and do good. And it's easy to share the feature if you're looking to drop some hints...
